Vancouver Rape Relief worker awarded Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of her contribution to community

Onna Tatum, a volunteer and collective member of Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter and Sylvia Aubrey a longtime volunteer with the Kamloops Sexual Assault Centre were awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award in recognition of their contribution to community. An award ceremony was conducted on Friday, December 6, 2002 the National Day of Commemoration and Action on Violence Against Women.

Onna and Sylvia were selected by their peers in the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres for the honour of the award. Making the award presentation was Lee Lakeman, the representative of Western Canada Region to the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres.

The award presentation was held in the atrium of the Vancouver Public Library. Both Onna and Sylvia spoke of the importance they place on feminist organizing against male violence. Onna called on the provincial government to reverse the brutal cuts to welfare, legal aid and women's advocacy centres warning that the cuts place more women in more danger. Sylvia spoke of her great relief that women in Kamloops had a trustworthy and compassionate group of women available in a crisis situation.
