rape crisis workers organize against sexist violence

House Opens

The Province Newspaper, 1981

Additional shelters for women who have been abused or sexually assaulted are desperately needed in the Vancouver area say officials of Rape Relief, and they have instituted a campaign to raise funds for this purpose

The residence they plan will be a place of refuge and an opportunity for women to get and give support, and they plan to open it soon. The need is emphasized by the fat that in 1980 Vancouver Transition House turned away almost 1,000 women and children.

Rape Relief is not asking for government funding for their shelter, feeling they should not compete with other women's groups for diminishing government funding. They have already raised $56,000 and the next fundraising project will be a walkathon on Sunday June 28 on the Stanley Park Seawall. Childcare will be provided. Pledge sheets and further information can be obtained by phoning Rape Relief and 872-8212.
