Come
meet, listen, and experience a panel of three women who have
fought for police and professionals on the job to be held accountable
for their responses to women and violence against women.
Jane
Doe, author, The Story of Jan Doe: A Book About Rape
Jane Doe will share her long legal battle against
the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force for failing to respond
swiftly, thoroughly, or effectively to women and to crimes against
women. Jane argued to the courts that she and all women under
the Charter of Rights and Freedoms have the right to be free
from sexist, negligent gender discrimination. Jane won her case.
Bonnie Mooney
Louisa Russell, an anti-violence worker, will
discuss Vancouver Rape Relief and Womens Shelters
intervention in Bonnie Mooneys civil courts appeal. Bonnie
fought to hold the Prince George RCMP, the British Columbia
Attorney General, and the Canadian Solicitor General accountable
for failing to protect her, her friend, and family from a violent
ex-partner. Her case continues on today.
Jill Gorman
Tamara Gorin, LINKS Researcher for the Canadian
Association of Sexual Assault Centres, will present an overview
of Jill Gormans civil lawsuit against her former psychiatrist,
Dr. James Tyhurst, who was abusive throughout her therapy with
him. The BC Supreme Court of Appeal recently upheld the lower
court findings that he had breached his fiduciary duty to his
patients.
