Vancouver's First Green Light District Opening

Victoria Park (Commercial Drive / Kitchener Street)
Wednesday, October 1, 2003 - 7p.m.

Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter in collaboration with the Support Education and Action Group and local residents announce the opening of Vancouver's first Green Light District.

This Green Light District is the start of a campaign to stop male violence against all women. The impetus for the Green Light District was sparked by several recent attacks on women's equality. These attacks include the increasing pressure for a Red Light District; drastic welfare cuts, that punish women who decide to leave abusive men with humiliatingly low welfare rates; and finally the recent increased media coverage and police warnings for women to not be alone in the streets or at work.

The Green Light District at Victoria Park, located one block east of Commercial Drive at Kitchener St., will be launched on Wednesday, October 1st, at 8 p.m. This innovative action aims to provide local communities with a way to build public space free from male violence against women. People will have the opportunity to join in and help create the green lanterns that will illuminate the Green Light District.

"Feminism has fought no wars.  It has killed no opponents.  It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, practiced no cruelties.  Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions.. for safety on the streets... for child care, for social welfare...for rape crisis  centers, women's refuges, reforms in the law." (If someone says) 'Oh, I'm not a feminist,' (I ask) 'Why? What's your problem?'"
