rape crisis workers organize against sexist violence

Green Light for Safety

West Ender Newspaper, Oct 2-8 2003

On Wednesday (Oct 1) members of the Vancouver Rape Relief collective set up what it called a "green light district" at Victoria Park (corner of Kitchener and Victoria). There the group placed green lanterns to invite passersby to "tour" and imagine a world free from violence against women. The action was spurred on by one man's spree last month of sexual assaults - and the police warning that women take responsibility for it by not walking alone at night.

That's not all. At the WISE Hall, 1882 Adanac, next Friday (Oct 10) from 7 p.m. It's there that Rape Relief will hold a community discussion on the mumbled-about idea of a red light district for prostitution - a concept VRR opposes. It's refreshing to see that even a small non-profit group with so few resources can make a dent by taking that it sees as a bad idea (like a red light district) and turn it inside out.
